“haLeya bhakti shraddhe aLisi hOgive maasi” = The faith and devotion of old times have vanished.

“suLidillavu aava hosa darshanada hoLapum” = there is no light of new philosophy either (to lead us further)

“paLagidda mane bidda kunTa kuruDana teradi” = the house, which was well known by the blind/lame, has now fallen… (very difficult for them to get adjusted to a new place)

“taLamaLisutide lOka – manku timma” = …likewise, is this world under a lot of pain and confusion.

This is another of Sri DVG’s, (apparently) complaining about the difficulties we are facing. Sri DVG makes is clear that we are not able to follow the old philosophies of bhakti and shraddha (devotion and faith). It is very hard to find people with unalloyed love and devotion towards the Lord. Today we are seeing that the people are no more interested in silent contemplation. More and more of people are being attracted towards the purely materialistic life. Spirituality seems to have reached its nadir…

“We don’t have time for all those things.”; “all those are for after 60’s, not for us…”; “enough of the troubles we are facing right now”… – these are the few commonly heard voices amongst our friends. Nobody is interested in God! This is what is meant by “haLeya bhakti shraddhe aLisi hOgive maasi”…

And, further, do we have any new “light”? There are many theories coming day-after-day… has any one of those satisfied and pacified the minds of humans? Science itself has been producing many many theories, so is it with other fields… but where is the end? So, amidst all this the common man is under utter confusion…

(Few kaggas before and after this put together, give raise to a question – if there were to be a God, a kind, just God – why all this misery and unreasonable suffering and confusion?)

Let us hope to find convincing answers to these and few more questions in the coming poems… More than anything, if we can either get back those ‘haLeya bhakti shraddhe’ or something even better than those (call this hosa darshanada hoLapu, if you wish) – that would give us a sense of achievement!

A Very Special Thanks to my Friend Dwarkanath M N for sharing DVG's Subhashitas with us.
